Such a resigned line is "everything I'll ever be, I've been". If that isn't giving in, I don't know what is. Am sure he wrote those lines during a bad time and later did not feel them as much.

I could be wrong, but I think "Hold me, love me, tie me up and drug me" is one of the greatest lines in a rock song ever. Do miss the pedal steel on this version, though.
