  • black walnut is toxic!

the trees pump toxins into soil and kill surrounding plants... also you should cover your breathing when working with black walnut or other exotic species!!!

  • Yeah, someone else commented on that too. Maybe that explains why my tomatoes aren't doing as well this year. Doh! Well, live and learn through YouTube!

  • Great project! question on the cross braces INSIDE the case. Why are they notched on the end? It looks like the lower part of the rabet is flush with the side of the case, but the top of the brace looks higher than the sides of the case? If this is so, why? and how high above the side does the notch need to be.

Thanks for responding. I love your videos... this one and the one on the jewelry box are great.

  • The top grid (the squares) sit in a rabbet on the frame. So the 3/4" frame supports the 1/4" top, leaving a 1/2" recessed area on the underside. Only the edge frame of the top assembly (see 5:27) sets on the sides of the case.

So the notch IS flush with the sides and the center of the brace is higher to fit into the recessed underside of the top.

I hope this sort of makes it clearer!

  • At 1:44 you finish cutting the dado's. Let me just mention that having lost the end of finger doing just what you were doing, that technique is extremely dangerous. You should always use a featherboard and a long push stick. When I was doing it the board bound and suddenly kicked back, causing 2 of the fingers on my left hand to "kiss" the dado blade. A long night in the hospital and surgery the next day put most of it back together, but you don't want this.
