About the video
This is a video showing you how to make some interesting effects using the camera tool in Garry's Mod; a mod for the video game Half-Life Source. You don't need to download anything other than what comes with your version of GMOD to get these effects. However, I do recommend downloading the NPC Camera add-on at this link http://garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=32053 to use an NPC point of view to film your machinima movies (includes slight head-bobbling). There are many other different styles of filming you can utilize out there but the ones addressed here in this video are geared toward single player directors. The possibilities can be endless on dedicated filming servers minus the mingebags. If you have any questions, post them on this video or on the forums over at facepunchstudios.com
Anyways, please rate...I started this help video at 6:00pm EST and now its 6:00AM (12 hours straight just to assist the GMOD Machinima community) so the proper rating would be nice my fellow Gmodders
One last thing: I know that a camera-tween add-on has been out on garrysmod.org for some time now (http://garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=3912) but I know a few people that haven't gotten it to work correctly and/or want to take the filming experience into their own hands. In addition to some of its flaws, it does not work with the newest version of GMOD, so your kind of stuck there and have to film using the ways mentioned in this video. Anyways, if you just play around with the physics timescale, use those rotate keys, weld the camera to props/ragdolls, and other weird idea's you might get some nice cinematic effects that can turn a static movie into something really badass.
Questions and Answers
Here are some questions I'm expecting to get from some people. Before they are posted and make the person makes themselves sound like a nub, I will answer them below for your convenience.
"ermm excuse me, but what was the name of the song in the beginning and end of the movie?" The song is called "Black Polished Chrome" by Jim Morrison of The Doors from his own spoken word album, "An American Prayer".
"How did you get the counter strike player model?!" With Garry's Mod 11 (Or as we know it, the new and updated GMOD 10) these models come defaulted with the program when downloaded via Steam.
"How did you get that 'thought box' coming from the metro police combine?" The thought box was created in Adobe After Effects CS3. Essentially, I motion tracked a point on his helmet and added a null object that followed the movement of his helmet. For more information on After Effects and helpful tutorials, visit http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/index.html . Andrew Kramer is an amazing tutor for many Adobe and 3d-based programs.
"How do you run GMOD so nice? What are your computer spec's?" A lot factors affect game performance but here is the quick answer: Intel Q6600 Over-Clocked to 3.60GHz, two Nvidia 8800GT's in SLI mode, 8GB Ram, Windows XP Pro, 1TB Raptor HDD, and a few other pieces of hardware. For today's standards, I can run Crysis at 50 FPS averaging on High settings in Directx9 so it basically mops the floor with GMOD at max settings and 8X Anti-Aliasing.
