I tried connecting my Lacie d2 Quadra 2TB drive to my iMac via Firewire 800 along with a Western Digital drive chained to the Lacie and my iMac started going haywire. Fan stopped working, iMac wouldn't boot up properly.
I finally disconnected everything, got the iMac running again and then connected the Lacie Quadra to my iMac via usb. Now it works. Go figure.

Hello! Nice tut. I have a question. How did you plug in the drives if the imac has only one Firewire input. Did you use an external FW card? Thanks!!
Yes I don't see why not as time machine will backup to a location. So set up the RAID and then point time machine to that Logical drive... have fun
Hi re the using other hdd disks such as iomega, sure and this is probably a good idea to mix two manufactures drives over the logical drive, what I mean is 2 drives forming a RAID 1 logical drive...
The Lacie have a great aftersales and all their drives have worked really well since I set them up..

Hi, the drives are daisy chained. The cable from the FireWire port on the iMac goes to drive 1 then there is a cable from drive 1 to drive 2 etc I have 3 drives using the FireWire port on the iMac

I have alote of high resolution video which just eats storage space so I need at least 1TB of space. I have the 2 drives in a Raid Array so that they mirror each other. So if 1 drive fails I don't lose any data. Just replace the drive and rebuild the array. Its an industry standard on internal server drives but this is with external. Works really well and fast!
