People think just because they're called "lakes" they should be calm little bodies of water. These are fresh-water oceans, folks, with tides and currents. I grew up on Lake Erie and I recall a lot of storms kicking 8 and 10 foot waves onshore. Erie was especially dangerous because it was shallow for its size, and the water roiled up faster in a storm.
