This was the infamous yellow FJ during our run on the Rubicon trail with the TTORA group. Listen to that ring gear sing!

  • rack and pinion in the rear axle is the noise, i have herd and seen it in the new fjs a few times

  • @jonwilly2

Rack and pinionis a steering device found in the front of the vehicle. I think you mean ring and pinion...and yes, that is what was making the noise. Several teeth had sheered off the ring gear.

  • There are several factory floor vehicles that can and have, run the Rubicon trail in stock form, including the FJ. I have been there and watched it happen. I really all boils down to driver skill. I have watched Jeeps, Toyotas, and Hummers, all in stock form, run trails from the Rubicon to Moab. They do amazingly well with the right driver. That is the fact...

  • It is funny since brand really doens't matter at that much and the people who know, know. I have seen all kinds of rigs do amazing things. Shit, my Tacoma rock crawler has a HP Ford 60 in the front and a 14 Bolt Chevy in the rear. All driven by Toyota motor, blower, transmission and xfer cases. Pointless to argue that one is better than the other. Although Toyota has a long standing history of reliability, at least the older ones.

  • FJ40's Rule

  • pinion...

  • Nowdays everything else to help you offroad is an additional package.

For instance, Road & Track before these came out and the H3 said what you could do if you invested it these options, but didn't bother to tell you what will happen if you don't

  • @Kaistiehaha only old yota's are reliable :)

  • Does an auto insurance covers these trail related body damages?

  • @damnedboner The unlimited is only 130 lbs less than an FJ. As far as being bulbus, the FJ is 1.3 inches wider. (As per Jeep's website).

  • ahahaha.....Keep the FJs in the repair shop where they belong and let a real rubicon show you how to get thru it without breaking your ride. And did i mention FJs has got to be the second ugliest vehicle ever behind the honda element (equaly as capable off road tho)...lol

  • @highdesertjim the problem is you had good jeeps for trail riding and mudding. Cherokee will do all the above and do it better then a toyota could ever do. I have yet to see a toyota out do my 89 cherokee

  • @jharris010 I've had toyota and even with my lifted toy taco I still couldn't go where my cherokee does. My cherokee has yet to get stuck anywhere my toy taco got stuck. My toyota was ok for moderate offroading but my cherokee will handle a lot worse beating and still drive home. Our last offroading trip my friends toyota drove to the spot and I towed my jeep there and we ended up towing my friends back and he drove my jeep back and i drove my expedition back.

  • @Heston83 Rack and pinion in the axle? How does toyota pull that one? Does it have 4 wheel steering? lol jk rack and pinion is steering not axle. Maybe lockers open diffs ring and pinion lol Sorry that is just as funny as my bro in law asking if my spider gears were worn out in the t-case lol Man that's funny lol
