Balsam root- Balsamorhiza sagittata- is a common wildflower in the western US. It looks much like a sunflower and is related to it. Description of the plant and ethnobotanical uses.

  • Can you key Carex's? What geographic area was this found, i saw a lot at the Southern Sierras

  • I have taught a classes on Carex identification for a field crews- which has also helped me to really buckle down and learn the terminology and really be meticulous in keying them out. Balsamorhiza sagittata is found throughout the west from British Columbia to southern California and west to North Dakota, Colorado, and Arizona.

  • Hi. Actually, I just made a tincture out of this plant. The roots would first have to be steamed and then dried (and then recooked) or yes they are quite woody! So, next time perhaps that's an option? Great video! :) Love these plants.
