A Eurocentric view of the plantation system and its effect on Southern U.S. culture.
Placing the viewer in the perspective of the white tourist family, a historically preserved Southern mansion is investigated and the past system of plantation owners and slaves is re-created. The homes of the past are contrasted with the homes of the current tenant farmers and landlords. At the end, as the viewer observes a polite barbecue party of well-dressed white people as the voiceover narrates:
"Today, if we visit a social gathering in the south, we'll see some of these things. The gentle manners and courtesy. The separation of society into distinct groups. And the relationship of that society to the land, which supplies its wealth. These are some of the things the plantation system has contributed to southern life."

@diyonisha You and 571jans are the racists here.

@571jans LOL! You know what, as I said if you want to think I am racist go ahead. It makes no difference to me. You are only defending black people who are racist. And you only do it by calling me racist. How pathetic. Learn the word because you obviously do not know the meaning of the word. I stick by what I have said. And no I do not act smarter. I AM smarter. Peace!

@571jans I never meant to compare humans to livestock. and I think slavery and the violence and degrading treatment of the slaves was evil. but from an economic standpoint it would make no sense to mistreat your slaves.you are correct it would take a degree of intimidation to keep them under control.perhaps making an "example" of a malcontent would serve an owner better than starvation of all your investment, the best strategy would be to allow children and threaten a breakup of the family.

@ralvarez15 Yeah, that's why people are openly racist today. Because it makes them look smart. Obviously you don't care about being racist; you're too damn dumb to know how much it hurts you. I don't care what happens to you, I just get pissed at people who project their ignorance and try to act smarter than they really are. Especially when they talk down to others. I can tell you're racist, because you bring up subjects only racists talk about, and you try to deny it by deflecting.

@MegaBearslayer Your post only makes sense if you think that men have the same brain as a horse. You don't have to "make examples" of one horse to others. You don't have to worry about horses jumping a corral and running away to freedom to the same degree that you do a human being. Horses are dumber than human beings, and "stubbornness" is not the same thing as a natural human drive for freedom. That's why they used violence so much.

@571jans I still stand by my first post, and you have never been around horses or some breeds of cattle (black angus and beefalo) they can be very stubborn and headstrong. the best horses are the ones that are hardest to break strongest and the best endurance , you still dont starve and beat them to death.

@571jans You are only angry because what I say is truth. It figures.:/

@571jans You are obviously an idiot raised to only believe in the ignorance society decided to show you. I am racist? For what? For speaking the truth? PLEASE!!:/ Sorry to disappoint you but the "racist" label doesn't scare me pee for brains. Calling someone "racist" does not make you correct or moral. It just makes you look stupid. :/
