With star Jimmer Fredette struggling with illness, the #23 BYU men's basketball team opened conference play with an exciting 77-73 win over the UNLV Rebels in the Marriott Center on Wednesday night. BYU was led by Noah Hartsock and Jonathan Tavernari with 17 points each. BYU led 33-30 at halftime but UNLV opened the second half with a scoring frenzy to lead 45-40 and force a BYU timeout. BYU fought hard to stay in the game, but hot shooting by UNLV had the Rebels control most of the second half. Some key UNLV turnovers, combined with huge offensive plays by BYU's trio of Michael Loyd Jr., Jonathan Tavernari, and Tyler Haws eventually propelled BYU to the come-from-behind victory. BYU is now 15-1 (1-0 in MWC play) and gets ready to renew an old WAC rivalry with UTEP on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.

  • "They've got a preseason All-American and supposedly the best player in the conference on the other team, so that's gonna be nothing but fun," the Rebels' senior guard (Tre'Von Willis) said in reference to Wednesday's monster of a conference opener at the Thomas & Mack Center. "I try to make him earn everything he gets. Like I said, he's got all of those accolades, but he's gotta come in and prove it.

  • Where you at now UNLV???? Can you say Jimmered???!!! Suck it

  • @naas000media Loser? You mean the "loser" university that is rated number 1 in the country in accounting, number 5 in business, number 15 in law. Yeh, that is real "loser" school. Oh, I forgot, Wall Street Journal two months ago ranked BYU as number 10 in the nation by Fortune 500 recruiters.

  • BYU is another loser university asociated with Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, Inc.

  • UNLV!!!!! make it happen dis year!!!

  • This will not happen this coming year, Marshall and the rest of the second unit for UNLV will be much developed and our entire starting five is coming back this year. Plus we got Kansas transfer Quintrell Thomas and Redshirt Freshman Carlos Lopez to finally give us some size inside... The size inside is going to be the difference this year. BY WHO!!!???

  • Yeah thats my team Go UNLV!!

  • haha, yeah ok. you really won by 15 plus. you are overrated, just like your football team

  • SCOREBOARD! SCOREBOARD! We are all excited to see the video highlights of the wac semi final game.

  • I'd rather have a football program that everyone knows sucks rather than have a sucky football program that only our school believes is elite.
