I've seen a few videos of this galaxy on YouTube, as well as many many screenshots, such as in player's guides, both online and in book form. One thing I noticed that they all have in common is that they use Boo Mario.

Boo Mario certainly has an advantage over Bee Mario, at least up to a certain point: There are far fewer obstacles for Boo Mario than Bee Mario, and he has no FLY gauge to deplete--he can float as much as he wants. However, notice a little quote: "It's bright because of the moonlight!"

That means Boo Mario reverts back to regular Mario should he float up above the Sling Star to the last part of the galaxy; Boo Mario is sensitive to light, including moonlight. Mario must traverse the spiral on foot. However, Bee Mario remains Bee Mario and can just fly across nearly effortlessly.
