The President of Ireland is a position which has been used to help strengthen connections between communities (in relation to Northern Ireland) and raise awareness if human rights issues, etc. A ordinary politician cannot do these things as well as a president like Ireland's because they are too much associated with controversial issues. The President of Ireland may not be powerful but do not underestimate the influence of the office holder.

The Presidency is a complete and utter waste of money. If the post was wrapped up (along with all those shawls) only the blasted elite would mourn its passing, 99.9% of people wouldn't give it a seconds thought.
Joke of a job with a no joke price tag!
Abolish it, the Senate and the hundreds of quangos and State bodies - streamline the State for the benefit of the peope! If you want trade missions sent Ministers of State!

Saying that the president's office is a waste is a grossly misinformed comment.
It is an important constitutional office that ensure the state's neutrality.
Without it, there would be a one less lever in the balance of powers.
