Beautiful the way Skye Boat Song sounds on your autoharp! I play this on the bagpipes and it doesn't sound as good as you make it sound. I have heard the song "You left me just when i needed you most" and wanted to know if that was a autuharp i hear in it or a dulcymer.

@gt350kr Not sure about the setup or if it was amplified, but yes, it's an autoharp.

Dear JoAnn, I have GDA 'harp. would you kindly tell me the chords I should use for this lovely song that you play so beautifully. Thanks kindly for any help you can give me,
David.

@ionadana Hi, David. You can definitely play this song on your GDA -- it sounds great in the key of D. Even though you probably don't have the exact chords I use, the standard major, 7th and minors you have on your 'harp will work just fine. Try this sequence: D D Em A D G D D D D Em A D G D D Bm Bm Em Em Bm G Bm Bm D D Em A Bm Bm G A. Strum the chords once for each count of 3. This gives you the basic chord progression of the tune.

JoAnn, thank you so very much for posting this song...your autoharp sounds very beautiful...tell me, does the choice of the wood make a difference & do the hand crafted one make a difference in playing...it seems so as I listen to different postings. Thanks! Donna

The type of woods used in the construction of the autoharp do indeed affect overall tone, but what I think you're hearing is differences in tuning. Most autoharps are chromatic, i.e. they have all 12 notes of the scale. On the other hand, I have my autoharps tuned to one single key each, so the scale is limited to just 7 notes on each one. See the video I posted entitled "Chromatic vs. Diatonic" which explains the differences between the two and how the different tunings affect sound.
