Institute For The Future's Anthony Townsend demonstrates the benefits of Internet connected devices, such as sensors on a bicycle. Townsend explains how people and cities are able to gather data about the environment and use it to implement policies and decisions from a personal to a citywide level.

-----

NEXT -- Nordic EXceptional Trendshop -- is a unique chance to get close to some of today's greatest minds. NEXT is a vessel bound for the new, the odd angled and the unpredictable. A home ground for exceptional minds and their inventions. The first NEXT was held in 2004 and since then NEXT had grown to be an international -- and acclaimed -- landmark for forward thinking, the new and the next within technology and business oriented innovation. - Innovation Lab

Dr. Anthony Townsend's research focus is on the impact of new technology on cities and public institutions, and the role of technology in economic development. Recent forecasts he has developed at the Institute for the Future address several inter-related topics: the impact of urban data on the poor, national innovation strategy for a major emerging economy, technology and restructuring of large public organizations, and the role of science and technology parks in economic development.

Anthony holds a Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master's in urban planning from New York University, and a B.A. in urban studies with a minor in physics from Rutgers University.

  • When I think of cloud computing I see the fact that I must have an internet connection to the outside world and that all my data is stored 'somewhere out there' in someone else hands.

Its because of these 2 reasons why my company wont be looking to the clouds for the forseeable future.

  • i don't like clouds. unless they are out there in the sky.

  • In the tag it says YouTubeApproved ?? wtf 1st of if you have to be online to use a cloud computer then how could it ever be popular or useful . 2nd if everything you do is online the greedy chicken neck corporations will gouge you for every bite and eat the bandwidth .even though it only cost a penny a gigabyte ,providers charge prohibitively .3rd its a track trace & database wet-dream .4th if no one uses a web cam anyone why do they still install them when less than 1% of % of users use them.

  • Why does this guy have to end every sentence he speaks with a question mark? He seems like a nice guy? Must be educated and learned? Got himself on Fora. But Dude this guy really has to get his head out of his ass?!

  • wow what a nothing clip. please find some better edits with more info. this was like a promo

  • Cool, but is it also tracking your location and tying it with personal info???

  • @tafftastic You can split the difference for best advantage. Keep sensitive material offline at all times. Work that isn't sensitive can be made immensely portable by clouding it. Having such work in the cloud also allows others you want to help in the project access even miles/continents away. Parsing made easy.

  • 0:16 "...how urban information is going to play at the marketplace..."??? wth...THERE IS KNOW MARKETPLACE!!!...The U.S. is now officially a 3rd world country!...U IDIOT!

  • seriously....SCREW THE CLOUD

  • @koouumar "theres no way anyone will willingly have that on their person"

They will sell thousands and thousands of these.

  • Is this one of those people who put a question mark after every sentence? I think he is? Which really shits me? And makes me want to anal fist him?

    Thanks for reading?

  • Every other word he says sounds like a question?

  • This is a gimmick.

  • @tafftastic I agree. I want to be able to use my media w/o having to use or have a data plan. Suppose I'm in a remote region of the world & just want to hear my music. I don't want a 3rd party involved. I don't want to be track-able. I want to be able to transfer the music I bought to a friend or another device no connected to my cloud. Clouds just use bandwidth needlessly. Not very practical or private. Young folks will go for it because it's new tech. That will usher it in.

  • @HonestJohn60 i dont want this ... control of our lives ? wide world of prison ? wow ...

  • I want one.

  • I think when enough data is "out there", your personal data is less interesting to anyone. Your life/habits/dreams can be "interpolated" pretty well.

  • theres no way anyone will willingly have that on their person only way i see that happening is if it was mandatory on all company vehicles for "various reasons"

  • i realize that most will argue that by relying upon 'specialists' we invite corruption and manipulation, however i simply feel that we are becoming overburdened. also it seems to me that those who we trust as representatives or 'specialists' dont get the credit they deserve. just as a side note, a person may be able to google the procedure for heart surgery, but im sure that most would rather rely on a 'specialist' to carry the surgery out.

  • this doesnt really have anything to do with the video, but a key phrase that he mentioned that stuck with me was something along the lines of 'this data will no longer be the sole property of the specialists, it will be available to all'. it seems to me that maybe the gen pop has a little too much info floating around with a little too much time of their hands, and that once upon a time we looked to the specialists to interpret this data manage it.

  • Most have nothing to hide, but most dont what to hide? - This system does everything in your PC, and you will use just a screen. You no longer will have a hard drive! They say news papers can be only a sheet of thin plastic. When insurance companys, employers, and who ever can look at every little thing you did, this can hurt you! Or if owe money, they just shut you off because this system will be your bank card also. This is what they want for our future. Your life in someones elses hands!
