I'm going on a tour there soon. Was it a nasty strain climbing the steps?

Not too bad ,there is a a place to rest about halfway. Worth the effort .Have you booked a tour ?

I went yesterday it's brilliant is it not! The bells were not as loud as i thought it would be.

don't be silly i ve been up there when the bells strike 12 its a wonderful experience I declined ear plugs I wanted to hear the full thing. but then again me been into clocks,chimes and church bells im gonna be used to it.

Trust me, you wouldn't want to be near those huge bells when the clock begins to strike. Of course you would feel the reverb of the bells as they strike, but the sound alone would be more than enough to deafen you. I would assume that anyone working up there would have the striking mechanism disabled or wear very good hearing protection.
