Mexico: Top Drug Trafficker Arrested

Soldiers and federal agents captured Vicente Zambada in an exclusive neighborhood in the southern part of Mexico City yesterday.

Vicente is the son of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, an ally of the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Guzman became Mexico's most wanted man after he escaped from a high security prison in 2001.

[Luis Arturo Oliver, Brigadier General]:
"The Secretary of National Defense reported that on the 18th, military personnel arrested in this city, Vicente Zambada Niebla, alias Vicentillo, son of Ismael Zambada Garcia, alias el Mayo Zambada and head of the Guzman Loera organization in the Mexico Federal District in the company of five other people."

Authorities said that Vicente was in charge of the logistical and security structure for the Sinaloa cartel, considered one of Mexico's biggest drug operations.

Drug trafficking continues to be Mexico's main security problem, despite President Felipe Calderon sending thousands of soldiers and police to the hardest hit areas in December, 2006.

Fighting between drug traffickers and security forces left some 6,300 people dead last year.
