What is this nonsense from Best AmateurViolinist about absence of breath control?!?!?!
And even is he were correct (and he is not), just the way Norman sings "und ruh'n in einem stillen Gebiet" is enough to merit her a place in heaven.

@dxhtz That instrument is the Cor Anglais. Of course, he cannot be the composer

Magnifique, la voix d'un ange

@pega17pl Took your advice, found it & love it. Have just played a version by Dame Janet Baker with Sir John Barbirolli & the Halle orchestra from a vinyl 33rpm record.

would like to watch & listen her performing "Der Abschied" from Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" as announced at the end of clip - curios whether she's able to achieve very high standard set by Christa Ludwig, Philarmonia and New Philarmonia Orchestra conducted by Otto Klemperer, 1966 recording (here at YT)

Perfection, just perfection there is nothing that is out of place here:the tempo, the singer ,the way she sings every word.
In this world of singers like gheorghiu, fleeming, cedolins,ba
rtoli and all those pieces of crap it is conforting to hear good singing. -

@MrDerekHurst me too, you say it all. it is a perfect piece. she really just nails the last few lines, perfect sound, beautiful sound and words, perfectly together. i barely know the other Ruckert lieder.

is that Mahler there, playing the clarinet there, at the beginning?

Wow... hadn't heard her version. So slow... but appropriately so. Not many singers could pull this off, but her rendition seems to lend itself to the expansiveness and timelessness implied by the text and music. This piece still strikes me as one of the most perfect lieder in the literature: text wed to music. I like the other Ruckert lieder, but his one just blows me away; every time. Thanks for posting it.
