One of the things our family did together in the 50s was join the Nelson family around our first black and white TV. As I was learning to play guitar and sing, Ricky Nelson was one of the artists I loved and I loved his music. When he died, I felt a sense of loss much as one does when they lose a family member.

Garden Party happened as a result of a Rock 'n Roll Revival concert given at Madison Square Garden. He showed up dressed for the times and dared to do some current music. Some of the fans expected and wanted the old Rickey Nelson and the old music and there were even boos from the audience. Ricky left the stage and was devastated at the response. This song is the story of that event.

My band is my cakewalk MIDI sequencer and the backing track I developed using BIAB. The guitar is an Ovataion CS257.

  • Very nice, just curious, why do you capo up instead of just playing in open D?

  • @MrDanzo711 Learned it in C way back when, got older, voice changed some, easier than relearning the runs in D...

  • Nice rendition can you put up a video showing to play the two licks and the intro in this song.

  • Very cool.. Appreciate a little lesson on how you play it. Especially that little run.

  • Classic song man. Perfect analogy for life dude. You can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself.
