A trip in June 2009 across the Balkan range of mountains, which runs across the country. The Balkans reach Alpine heights where, past dense forests, nothing grows but thin grass. The trip covers Veliko Tranovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria, known for its astounding scenery and gigantic fortress. It also covers the town of Kazanlak, the biggest town in the Valley of the Roses - the center of the rose oil industry in Bulgaria. Many beautifully painted Thracian tombs, dating 1,600 years ago, were found in that area. The journey continues through the two major mountain passes across the Balkan range - Shipka and Troyan, the charming Troyan Monastery and the quaint historic villages of Arbanasi and Koprivshtitsa.
