This is just a synopsis of what happened to me at work. basically I was told that I needed to change my hair because it did not fit the "abercrombie look" and then I was told that I would not be given any hours until I did. I have talked to people in the human resources department, and a few others but I just think its unfair. Should I sue, or just Leave it alone? What should I do?

  • idk. ive wroked with two other retail stores and i have never had a problem like that. granted it was not that big of a deal but its crazy. a few of the other girls and guts that worked there also had the same issue. a manger said she had to change something about herself too, but i think its unacceptable. i understand that stores want u to look a certain way, but to basically tell u that u need to change the way you look i think is crazy. I worked at the Gap and i loved working there. i never

  • But just to be frank with you I understand why they approached you with this matter. I say that because I know for a fact if you are working with customer of any kind you have to portray the brands image (to a certain degree) while being yourself. I’m a fashion merchandising student and have worked in retail for some years and I have seen first hand at a # of retailers mangers discriminating employees and applicants in regards to looks, trends, styles, as well as ones attractiveness.

  • @Kaylyntata had a problem there. people worked there that were all nationalities, wore there hair in a variety of ways, dressed differently, and nobody ever got pulled up about it. i think that unless u r in an office setting, and have a strict dress code, you should be able to dress how u want, and wear ur hair how u want with out any issues. i know that is too far fetched but i think that is how things should be.

  • Y r u justifying it by saying that things change in fashion. There was a time when being African American wasn't in style either, that doesn't make it right.

  • At the interview they told us what was and what was not appropriate. Those things are also stated in the handbook. They pretty much told us based on what we wore, what would be ok for work such as eyeliner and mascara. From what I was told by the manager in HR and by an investigator at EEOC, unless my hair style goes againt what is printed in the handbook they cannot tell me to change it or not give me hours over it.

  • Everyone is apparently uneducated on here. this is definitely discriminatory. Im getting my bachelors and masters degree in business and i'm taking an HR Management class right now. We actually talked about Abercrombie's discriminatory lawsuits today. Women and minorities have all sued A&F and won. in one case, A&F had to pay them $40 million dollars. They want you to look white. that's their brand. A&F are just asking for lawsuits. You should sue.

  • its a the dress code if you were white with your like that they would tell you the same thing just stop bitchn and change your hair smh !!!!!!

  • Oh gosh, another misfit complaining about our look policy. You're making minimum wage anyways, go apply at American Eagle or Foot Locker if your hairdo is so important to you. It's apparent you can't even spell ABERCROMBIE much less pronounce it 'ambercrombie'.. You're lucky they still have you in the system, in our market, we would have replaced you 7 times already. Besides, you seem ghetto fabulous, A&F isn't for you. You're more fit for a 7/11 or Dollar General.. #JustSayin

  • @SophieLovesHCO no. actually they want her hair to look "Caucasian" If she were to come to work with a tiny natural afro, they'd ask her to get a relaxer. Long and straight typically isn't natural for most African Americans. The problem is not that it's not natural. It's that it's not white.

  • you should turn up with an Afro- nice, neat an clean, grown naturally, then you'll find out how racist they really are.

  • Since they are being like that and states in their book that it must look like it grew that way (natural cut) tell them to buy you a natural looking wig and you will wear that as part of the "uniform". That is the best compromise I can think of because I don't think you should have to change your hair for them but it does say in their book (which is crazy in itself but I am not American. Maybe rules are different there). Yours is the 2nd complaint story I have heard of working there. Wow crazy!

  • this is not discrimination, its dress code

  • they are fucking racist cunts

  • Well I am just going to say, A & F has a certain look of natural. You have to follow the dress/ attire code in order to work there. If your hair isn't natural then they will bring it upon you to change it. Its not crazy if you want to work there. It has to look natural.

  • this isnt discrimination. lol
