Есть на теплом море Чудный камень яхонт;

Song of the Indian Guest

Not to consider some diamonds in stone caves,
Not to consider pearls in the sea midday -
Far India of miracles.

There is by the warm sea a wonderful stone Yahont,
On that stone the Phoenix - a bird with a face of the maiden.
Paradise all songs it is sweet sings,
Feathers dismisses, the sea closes.
Who hears that bird, all forgets.

Not to consider some diamonds in stone caves,
Not to consider pearls in the sea midday -
Far India of miracles.

Sadko (Russian: Садко, the name of the main character) is an opera in seven scenes by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The libretto was written by the composer, with assistance from Vladimir Belsky, Vladimir Stasov, and others. Rimsky-Korsakov was first inspired by the bīlina of Sadko in 1867, when he completed a tone poem on the subject, his Op. 5. After finishing his second revision of this work in 1892, he decided to turn it into a dramatic work. The opera was completed in 1896.
The music is highly evocative, and Rimsky-Korsakov's famed powers of orchestration are abundantly in evidence throughout the score.
The world premiere took place on 7 January 1898 (O.S. 26 December 1897) presented by the Russian Private Opera at the Solodovnikov Theatre in Moscow. Its conductor was Michele Esposito and scenic designers Konstantin Korovin and Sergey Malyutin.

  • Russian is a wonderful language for singing. I don't understand a word but ti's beautiful. Once 4ive heard Tosca in Russu-ian, practiclly as perfect as Italian. I think this is due to the many vowels ?

  • Rimsky-Korsakov was a master colorist

both for the voice and for instrumental

compositions! The Song of India is

exotic and mysterious and casts an

    intoxicating spell that mesmerizes

    the senses...as does Solovyanenko's

    interpretation. Beautiful, colorful

    visuals deepen the magic. Thank

    you for posting!
