  • what do you mean drummer needs to play constant ? most of the music i enjoy has dynamics and the drummers go from very quiet to VERY loud in a nano sec how do you deal with that ?

    yes they do,

    the problem is: the sound of a snare, kickdrum, tom sounds differently when it is hit very hard

    or very soft.

    So even if you compress the track to a constant volume,

    the sounds changes all the time.

    and especially for metal, that doesn't work very well.

  • I've got a question: has the audio interface you put on firewire to your compter anything to do with the quality of recording or is it just for a good sound on the speakers? ...and what exactly is the difference between a preamp and an audio interface?

    A interface is a connection from microphones and other Inputs to the computer.

    A preamp is only gaining microphone signals.

    The interface is not that important for sound in home studios, but in Pro studios.

  • I disagree.

    People do it, because after the recording you wanna work on the special parts of the kit.

    EQ or compress the snare, cause it will sound better. And this you can only properly if the snare is gated.

    Especially for Rock and Metal.

    For Jazz you use a way different approach.

    You record each drum with a mic again, but your main mics that you use in the mix are the overheads. In Jazz you want a real sound.

    In Rock and Metal you wanna push the sound to get as big as possible.

  • I have a question, i have recorded lots of stuff, i don't have high quality equipment, but how do you get every mic to show up on a separate track on the mix? I run a mic for a snare drum, 1 for the kick, 1 for high toms, 1 overhead, and 1 for the floor toms, and i don't know how to get every individual mic to show up on separate tracks. Is it just the mixer? or your soundcard?
