An appropriation project taking already-made footage and creating a critique by editing it.

Here, I am trying to shed light on the blatant racism in the Disney classic, Dumbo. The imagery of the African Americans working on the same level as the circus animals is very unnerving... Perhaps even more disturbing are the actual lyrics of the song. I decided to place the emphasis on this by borrowing the format used by the Disney's Sing Along Songs videos and having the "bouncing ball" force the viewer to focus on the words being sung.

  • How could it be named 'Yes, Sir'? I did find it around YouTube and on Amazon and it was already named 'The Song Of The Roustabouts'.

  • @SimpleJars It isn't the original song. I edited it down to critique it, hence the different name.

  • How Did You Do That With Bouncing Ball?

  • @alexthealex7 a combination of After Effects, Photoshop and Flash.

  • This isn't the ACTUAL song you just edited it to make it look racist. WTF

  • @Henryduckfan63 I never said it was the actual song. It's edited and that's the point. ;)

Dumbo is a product of it's time and I definitely know Disney wasn't maliciously injecting racism in it's children's films. However, it's interesting to look at these movies now with our shifted cultural perspective and noticing how less concerned we were with the notions of racism and political correctness back in the day. Surely, Dumbo would be a completely different movie if made by today's standards.

  • This film was based on a circus in early 1900s America. At that time, virtually all circus laborers were black. They were commonly referred to as "Routabouts." They were well known to live "in the moment" - spending all of their money on alcohol, women, and good times when they weren't working. They lived very hard, fast, and short lives. This film is actually quite authentic. It can only be perceived racist if you view the actual actions and lifestyles of early 1900s roustabouts as racist.
