South Korea was in a desperate need for a strong tank. Their M47 anf M48 Patton Tanks are outdated and couldn't withstand North Korea's better T-60 tanks. So, the South Korean President Park Chung Hee made a deal with the company that made those M1 Abram and with the Hyandai Motor, they made the K1-88 Battle Tank series. The K1 tanks are proven to be one of the top ten best (T-90, M1 Abram, etc).

@brianchoi92 He's obviously a redneck

@morda8 Its based off of the same prototype, but it actually has many differences...For example in many ways its more advanced than the M1a1, but not the new m1a2. The engine, transmission, and optics are all different....the 105mm rifled gun is also different. It was basically designed to fight alongside the US M1ax in case of a war.....its a very very good tank

K1A1 was designed by Hyundai Rotem, and is 20 tons lighter than M1A1, because korean terrain demands lighter faster tank compared to heavier slower M1A1. K1 which was design in mid 80s was design by Hyundai with General Dynamics as consultant in electronics only, which is why K1 is 20 ton lighter than M1. K1A1 was completed in the mid 90's by Hyundai Rotem. All tanks have similarities like USA M1 which benchmarked German tank Leopard.

We didn't "give" it to them, more like we sold it. General Dynamics helped design it, but the Koreans did a lot themselves.

The K2 is better it is a great tank made by the south korean. I love North Korea but South Korea is pretty awesome too
