A video response to the many videos showing off one windows server and calling it a server room. Two 1u servers, one sparc (debian linux 3.0) and one intel (freebsd 5.4), and a dual xeon desktop running gentoo linux (not used as a server!). Also one laptop, running windows vista home premium (for gaming and windows dev), crammed into the smallest room you ever saw. I use these for application development (http://www.inspircd.org ) and testing, and hosting my websites. There is also a sun storedge T1 here (disk array) which i cant get to work (yet - won't fully power on!).

sorry about the poor lighting!

  • mymothersmeatloaf, yes several years ago some romanian script kiddie tried to break into my server, it disconnected itself from the internet when he tried to change one of the startup scripts, leaving all his command history and urls to his rootkits etc on my system :) I reinstalled it anyway, can never be to safe...

  • pwnalmighty1231, both my servers and the NAS unit are second hand. The main server cost me 70 quid on ebay, and the other two cost me nothing but my effort to lug them home from work (the NAS unit weighs a good 70lbs *empty*).

In short i spend most of my money on my desktop, i dont have a high paying job, i just save up and dont really spend it on much else (like all good geeks!). Keep an eye out for stuff going cheap or for nothing at all that youre willing to spend lots of time refurbishing.

  • pcxfer: i use freebsd for webserver, svn server, mailserver (imap-ssl) and some other bits and bobs. It also acts as a perimiter firewall and gateway for my network.

jonnytcarryduff: I call this room my bedroom :) To me a server room has proper air conditioning and technicians :) Theres nothing wrong with taking pride in your kit, but it makes me laugh when people call it a server room :) You have some very nice kit there by the way. any videos of it?

  • out of all linux i prefer Red Hat Enterprise Linux (rhel)

thats what i have on all my servers

  • nice logitech mouse, i have the same one cant live without even if they are getting expensive to replace, i have them on all of my computers

  • @DaVampire182 Well... Did you save a server?

  • @braindigitalis What's a quid? haha

  • nice server room:)

  • Thats pretty awesome. It's like you have so many servers you have to stick them wherever theres space, like under your dresser and in spaces between the desk and table. Also GNU+LINUX IS THE KING OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

  • Brings back memories. A very long time a go was on a private upper secondary high school where they let you borrow a laptop for 3 years. There i sat and programmed until one day i shaw my firewall log filled with IP that had tried to do a SSH bruteforce.

  • wow have you ever had any scurity breeches with hackers or anything?

  • lol i cried when my server room burnt so ashes in my fire, thank god for my fireproof safe and daily backup routine ! lol
