This series of two videos shows how to install Ubuntu Linux Desktop in VMWare Server, a free application for Windows (XP or Vista) that will allow you to run a full Linux desktop in a window on your desktop. These techniques are demonstrated on Windows but also generally apply to the VMWare Fusion for the Mac. Why do it? To experiment, to learn, and for instructional purposes. The video is divided into two sections due to length limitations; view both for the complete instructions. For part 2, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBYMUNGPmqs. Ubuntu Linux Desktop version 8.04 is a free download at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. Total running time is about 20 minutes. To install Ubuntu Server, see the companion series Install Ubuntu Server in VMWare Server.

I think they may have recently removed the older server versions for VMWare... I downloaded ver 2, but I'm using mvpc 2007 so it's no biggie. I would like to dabble with VMWare though as long as it's free.

I solved the problem. I just needed to move the unextracted .iso file to the folder, and there it is! VMware Server found it. The mistake I did was that I extracted the items to the folder, and VMware Server can't find extracted .iso files. Thanks for your help!

Well, no. I can't see your computer from here and I wasn't watching when you downloaded it. It's wherever you put it.

I moved it to My documents and gave it its own folder, and when I open the folder to find the .iso file in VMware Server, the only thing that shows up is some folders called .disk, casper, dists, install, isolinux, pics, pool and pressed. Some of the folders contsins more folders, and I don't want to go through them all like a labyrinth. So do you know which of these folders I have to enter to find the .iso file?

I need help. I installed VMWare Server, but it will only allow me to configure a remote host. There is no option between configuring a remote or local host, and I am running Windows Vista. Please help ASAP!

At 3:02, just click cancel. I haven't reviewed server 2.0 for differences, but you shouldn't need to connect to a remote host. If you have further issues, post into the vmware community forums. I'm currently running virtualbox and vmware workstation, and I can't load server 2.x for troubleshooting. Once you get to the point where you can do a new virtual machine, the rest of the video should work for you.

I did click cancel, but it only enables me to access help options and connecting to a host. Everything regarding a virtual machine is grayed out. I am using the latest version in the 1.x series and not the 2.x series. Someone else on the forums had a similar issue, and they said to type a command in a command prompt, and press F8. I did type the command, but I still have issues. Did they mean press F8 to go into safe mode and install it? What do you think? (I'm thinking about the forums.)

I'm not sure; I would follow up in the VMWare community forums. There isn't anything I can troubleshoot at this point. I tried several installs of vmware server when I produced this and didn't experience anything like you describe.
