WONDER WOMEN! THE UNTOLD STORY OF AMERICAN SUPERHEROINES traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, WONDER WOMEN! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society's anxieties about women's liberation. WONDER WOMEN! goes behind the scenes with Lynda Carter, Lindsay Wagner, comic writers and artists, and real life superheroines such as Gloria Steinem, Shelby Knox and others who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male dominated superhero genre.

Wonder Woman is more than a heroine; she's a huge heroic icon, and she's not overshadowed by the top males superheroes either.

Nonetheless, looks like a great doc and would love to see it.

To desire a role model of the groups you find yourself in who is strong -- with whom you can identify, is a basic human need common to people of all genders and types. The desire to no longer feel vulnerable (except when one chooses to) is almost universal. Sadly, the war between the sexes is still on in full swing, and to many, "strong" means "completely self-sufficient. I cartoon a series about a super-strong female lead who is both a champion, yet still a friend to those weaker than she...

Buffy (in the first seasons mainly) remains the best "superheroine" ever.

This doc came 2 generations too late. Today's women don't need WW specifically, as inspiration anymore...female action heroes & strong role models are everywhere in the media. Riot grrl was useless, bands that came from it terrible & untalented. Also re comic history, at least a dozen superheroines before WW (Sheena, Fantomah, Miss Victory) so claim WW was "1st" is just incorrect. I love Lynda C. as much as anyone, but this is ham-fisted simplistic cheerleading. Just make the WW movie already!

you're right, fictional characters have ben a big insperation to me as well, the adventures of the galaxy rangers, the whole team, if they come in to your life at the time you need them, they can help guide down the right, or wrong path, it depends on how much you identify with them.

I couldn't help but tear up a little as I was watching this video. Although I had a few real-life female role models to look up to (my mom and a few of my teachers), the fictional characters from movies and television shows that were a part of my childhood were equally as inspiring. Sailor Moon, the Powerpuff Girls, Jenny the Teenage Robot, the Disney princesses, Totally Spies, Hermione Granger...etc.

That's so great that your mother was such an amazing person, but fictional characters can also be an important source of inspiration for many people, especially if they don't have anyone in real life to set a good example or encourage them. Fictional characters can tackle problems in their fictional worlds that children (and adults) might feel powerless against and seeing their favorite characters solve those problems can be really encouraging.
