These are herring gulls. Their feathers range from gray and white (and maybe a few black wing feathers) to brown and white. Another seagull is the great blackback seagull. Unfortunately none showed up for a free meal at this bread toss. The great blackback seagull grows a little larger than the herring gull. Seagulls make various calls varying from soft to raucous. They soar wonderfully and can maneuver shrewdly. Some pigeons compete here for the bread. -- Stephen Contrado, B.A., Th.M.
