    "Wear sunscreen" is a metaphor. Sunscreen is used to protect you from all the things the sun can harm you with, so the author Mary, is saying/telling you advise to protect you from your future life that is ahead of you. Because the author Mary has been there and done that, so she's giving advise to protect you just like sunscreen does!(:
