The Pixley refuge, a migratory bird refuge, was established in 1960.
The Sandhill cranes begin arriving in September. They breed in the south edge of Alaska.
The large, 4-foot-tall birds, with wing spans greater than 5 feet, weigh about 6 pounds. They forage for insects and plant roots in nearby fields during the day and roost in the wetlands at night. They leave every morning and return to the wetlands around sunset daily.
Most can be seen in November and they begin leaving in early March.
