Frank Schaeffer on Democracy Now! Part 1 of 2

Frank Schaeffer is the bestselling author of Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back. He is the son of the late evangelist Francis Schaeffer and considered himself a lifelong Republican. He voted for John McCain in 2000, and McCain even endorsed one of Schaeffers earlier books on military service. But on Friday, Schaeffer published an open letter to McCain excoriating the Arizona senator.

Frank's father, Francis Schaeffer wasn't perfect to be sure, but I do think he genuinely cared for the counterculture of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and strove to understand them and speak lovingly and meaningfully to their intellectual concerns. But what I see here in this video is a man who hasn't yet found his center. I think Frank has some approval issues that he still hasn't worked out yet. But hell, so do I. I guess it takes one to know one.

Frank prefers Christians who yell, "Goddamn America!" and teach Black Liberation Theology, which is a racist doctrine that Obama sat under for years.

McCain didn't change. The RNC owns McCain since the S&L crisis when they got him off b/c he was a war hero. What else did they have on him? I think it was enough to get McCain to SUBMIT to having his arms raised above his head by George Bush at the convention when Bush took the republican nomination. McCain had both arms dislocated in Nam. This after Bush & Rove spread the rumors that McCain betrayed his country as a POW. In 2008 McCain was forced to hire the same PR ppl for his campaign.

It does my heart good to look through these comments. I thought I was in some Bizarro world when I first started watching these videos of Frank. I was actually broken-hearted about it. But to see the active discourse on both sides, and intelligent most of the time, has lifted my spirit a bit.

I really think that Frank has always been a bit unstable, and I say that as a reliable source. I have always hoped and still hope that he will find his way.

Frank, I remember when you burst on the scene in the early 1980s and (almost personally) hijacked the evangelical movement for your (then) pet pro-life cause. You dragged them off message, and stirred up the loonies among them.

And now, judging by the responses to this video, you are whipping up the blood lust of the fringe types on the other side. In both cases, Frank, you seem satisfied only when you are stirring up hatred.
