actually, since the 70s (and the rise of the home-owned video camera) people have been trying to prove the negative effect of piracy on the entertainment industry.

the real kick is that according to EACH AND EVERY one of these damn studies, piracy has actually proved to be financially beneficial, and people are having a hard time explaining why.

its mostly the rule of word of mouth: the more popular something is the more it sells. it turns out piracy makes everything massively popular.

If I buy a book I can let my friends read it or read it to them. Letting people use my CDs or movies for free if I bought them is the same thing.
