Well there is a type of thing called a Domain. Only servers can set up domains. If any one wants to go into the domain and they get in. You have to add a user for the domain. + you can hack other PCs on your Domain!

Layman's terms,
servers 'serve' client computers, like Vista, stuff they don't have (like a YouTube server might have a million vids your computer doesn't have).
So people config and use servers to make your computer more interesting to use.
(That is, if the server doesn't have a virus that another client put on it.) but that's another story...
