THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!! I am trying to convince my husband to have our next house be an earthship. So far he is not budging.......any suggestions of persuasion???

@jesslynn0083 Cost the same to build one as a traditional home. If you hire it out that is, best thing of all no utility bills ever again!

@123mainst1 You can also read the cover page form the New mexico Environmental Department by searching Earthship Offgassing where you will find the Architect's website with this information. The research has been done and this is a completely safe and most of all a durable, cost effective living solution. These Earthship's can be put up against any conventional type housing structure for long term durability and efficiency. He don't even need a furnace.

@123mainst1 You just haven't researched enough! The offgassing of tires is a non-issue. Tires are hazardous in piles not Earthships. There is 40 years of research and development of self-sufficient housing made from recycled materials.
There is also an extensive study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison that was presented to us by the state of New Mexico.
The research can be obtained through the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, 53706.

My research shows tires to be hazardous and disposal of them is treated that way by many codes, rules and regulations, including landfill disposal. How are you dealing with the toxicity and potential leaching of the toxins?

@123mainst1 Also, how about all the playgrounds that use shredded tire pieces? Are these hazardous? The truth is tires are hazardous in piles and landfills because of water sitting, mosquitoes, along with rats and mice problems. Then you have decomposing off gassing. This causes unhealthy situations not tires rammed with earth. And using tires for foundations is so much more healthier than burning them. Regulations by the EPA are out there for people creating dumps of tires. Search Google :)
