i think there was another mistake as well,during war, the russians were retreating into different cities and the french were following them. The russians new that the french were living off the food and shelter of the cities so the russians burned them down so they couldn't 1)have a sufficient supply of food 2)they would be weakened and would be forced to retreat. That is how the battle was won by the russians because they began to attack with cavalry when the french retreated as they grew weak
