Sometime in the early 1960's Dorothy Collins was in Cincinnati, Ohio, to appear in the musical "Brigadoon." In order to promote the show Dorothy went on the extremely popular "Ruth Lyons' 50-50 Club," where she chatted about her days on TV's Your Hit Parade where she starred with Gisele MacKenzie. Dorothy hadn't planned to sing, but Ruth coaxed her into doing one of her (Dorothy's) personal Hit Parade favorites, "Too Young." You can hear Ruth (who had perfect pitch) suggest keys to the show's band leader, Cliff Lash, and without any rehearsal Dorothy and the band turned in this remarkable performance. At :34 Dorothy says "I like that bow" which I recall was a reference to the bow and flowers on the microphone that MS Lyons always had on her personal mics...when the spur of the moment decision was made that Dorothy would sing, Ruth handed MS Collins her personal microphone.

  • Thanks so much for posting this; I'm a huge (and probably just about the last) fan of Ruth Lyons and The 50-50 Club cast. Brings back so many memories of long, long ago. *sigh*

  • Remarkable and unbelievable! I think Ruth Lyons could "coax" anyone to do just about anything. Our house watch the 50/50 club and "Mother" every day at 12 Noon! Thank you for sharing this with us!
