This is why the DVD was first introduced back in 1996, it rocks! Look at VHS tapes back then, they started to dwindle down of course.

the only good point about DVD Between Laserdisc is :
1- the movie is used one side disc without change the face for seing the next chapter
2- it's smaller
3- we can used more multiplexed audio channel for multilingale ( on LD it was difficult to found disc with the original version and the dubbed version especialy in europe)
4- now we can record it try with a laserdisc XD with just 45 min of picture on each side.
i agree that LD was cool back then but unafordable for many people because of price

LOL. They claim that DVD has CD-quality audio when it is barely used to save up space with a compressed AC3 2.0 track. CD-quality audio was already mandatory in most Laserdiscs made after 1985, and by DVD having better resolution than Laserdisc really means it has 55 more lines than LD. Yet, Dolby Digital debuted on LD in 1995, and DTS came to LD when DVD came out. You think this ad mentions DTS? And those two Panasonic models would be outdated by the new millenium.
And now we have Blu-ray.

Is it just me, or does the voiceover sound like Woody Allen?

DVD offered so many extreme improvements over VHS.
Laserdisc was already really high in quality, but DVD looked better because of the Digital Picture if offered, Laserdisc was Analogue Picture.

pre-widescreen craze.

you are a clown it will still at least another 2 year to dvd to be somehow obsolete
He says something about watching foreign films - DVD was the format that saw the end to that with regions

There's so many region-free players out there it hardly matters though. I've actually learned a bit of Canadian French from watching movies with the dubbed tracks.

I remember seeing something similar to this back a decade ago! Too bad I had't gotten psyched up to buy the earliest models, though I bet they'd be terrible outdated by the beginning of the new century.

My main DVD player is a 9-year old Pioneer DVL-909, combination laserdisc and DVD player. It still handles most new discs and recorded ones well. The first-generation DVD players can't output DTS sound though, so I would have been pissed if I'd been stuck with one of those.
This disc looked awful when I saw it in the stores, but it looks OK on my system.
