Probably the earliest live recording featuring Nick Cave (1977). This is the band that would go on to become The Birthday Party. Rowland S. Howard had yet to join.

They offer up a hilarious version of "These Boots Are Made for Walking," a song Cave claims to have written.

  • Anybody else notice that Phil Calvert was a really good drummer and then got worse and worse and worse?

  • I always thought Mick was a better drummer.

That said, in Calvert's defense, once Rowland S. Howard joined the Birthday Party, they started using a lot of quite tricky time signatures. This is just straight-ahead 4/4.

  • RIP Rowland S Howard

  • @dougjohnston40

It's amazing how fast he went. One of my favourite players.

  • dis be better than the studio (single) version!

  • @EuchridEucrow1 Not really, he was a walking skeleton 20 years ago. I think there are only so many drugs/alcohol the body can stand. Is he dead? Shit. What a bugger. I agree he was a legend, or is now.

  • so nick cave was like 19/20 yrs old at the time of this recording

  • I've always admired this bands sense of humor. best band on earth. almost sure of it.

  • Sooo cool! I thought I had heard all the boys next door stuff. Thanks for uploading!

  • lmao! did he really claim this?

  • Phill - very good play on drums, Cave extra image (specyphic hair). I like all bands Cav's, Harvey,s, Calvert's, Howard's and Blixa's (Boys Next Door, Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution, Einesturzende Neubauten, Bad Seeds)

  • Perhaps you're right...
