Investigators say cop helped drug dealers

BARTOW -- Keenan Colson walked into the Polk County Jail handcuffed, surrounded by a gaggle of TV cameras and reporters. He kept his eyes down and refused to answer questions.

Colson was an officer with the Lake Wales Police Department until Wednesday morning when he was arrested after his shift.

Investigators say Colson gave members of an alleged drug ring operating out of Haines City information to keep them one step ahead of the cops.

"He would walk them through what to do. He would walk them through what not to do. He would tell them how to avoid arrest and detection," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Detectives say Colson used his computer at the police station to check people out, even running the tag of an undercover officer.

"We have taken someone, unfortunately, out of our ranks who should have not been there, who does not deserve to be there," said Lake Wales Police Chief Herb Gillis at a press conference.

Investigators also arrested eighteen other people, including the ring's alleged ringleader, William Cade, known on the street as "Big June."

They seized marijuana, cocaine, guns, and more than $60,000 in cash, and say they are not done with the sting yet.

What law enforcement personnel like Colson should have done was post the information on avoiding arrest on the Internet. Marijuana users and growers need as much information as possible to keep tragedies like this outlandish arrest from happening again.
