The main reason it was wasn't due to it being obsolete; it was due to the fact the airframes were hella old and require a retarded amount of service hours to maintain. It just wasn't worth the cost.

the F-14 can take out a tank. It's equipped with 20mm m61 vulcan cannon (a gatling gun), 6000 plus rounds per minute. If that's not enough, a JDAM & Paveway would do the job. Plus, A-10 is meant to be a ground attack aircraft, but its easy target if intercepted by fighters like the Mig-29 fulcrum. So u need the F-14 tomcat to protect & escort u since its one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Nice plane, the technology used in the F14 still surpasses even more modern fighters. very sad that it isn't used in the US and ony elsewhere in Iran. However, with planes like the F15 and F18 for air and ground attacks and even planes like the F16, F22, and A10 it isn't needed, despite how much it will be missed by everyone including me.

@TgsMaverick and the presedent of Nothtrop Grumman pissed off Dick Cheny... I think the F-14 needed an update of revision not just to have it kicked out of service.

A sweep wing design (which the U.S. currently does not have anymore) adds a lot to the amount of roles the craft can be used in , it can be a carrier defense craft, and attacker, a fighter, a strafer..... it;s the ideal multi role design.

@Tyco200 Nah, its sad but the cost of designing and installing enough upgrades to keep them competative for a reasonable extension just isnt worth it. Might not even be possible. they will still be old planes with too much stress on the airframe. I will always remember them but while it was here, they did their job perfectly. Lets hope the angry kitty's replacement fills his shoes.
