Mark Martinez talks about his new book "The Myth of the Free Market: The Role of the State in a Capitalist Economy".

In this thoughtful and erudite book, Mark Martinez forces us to re-examine the myth of the 'natural' free market order.
- Ha-Joon Chang, University of Cambridge, author of Kicking Away the Ladder and Bad Samaritans.

  • I just bought this book. It should be a good read.

  • Of course we don't have a free market, we have corporatism. Try telling this to Michael Moore.

  • Adam Smith said taxes are a "badge of liberty".

  • @sc0pl355 *facepalm*

  • The state creates the conditions for ENDLESS, ENDLESS WASTE.

  • @sc0pl355 The fact that anyone has to pay taxes because there American implies that we are owned.

  • @hahahaspam Agreed, he also says you have to pay taxes because you're american, but most people don't get to choose where they are born. There just born into slavery.

  • @hahahaspam The farmers are not slaves.

  • @hahahaspam I agree, benefiting, a little or a lot, from a given regime does not implie an obligation to accept that said regime.

But I would say that argument, even fallacious maybe, raises the more general question ; would those farmers, or any other groups who criticize taxes, be coherent enough to not demand subsidies and privileges for themselves ? I'm not quite sure they would be.

  • Farmers that complain about taxes aren't allowed to on a logical basis because they receive subsidies.

People who benefit from a system are not allowed to complain about the costs of that system.

A slave that gets food and shelter is not allowed to criticize the institution of slavery.

Wow, Mr. Martinez, your logic fails.
