Remember those high school chemistry experiments in which you mixed two harmless chemicals and got a bizarre reaction? You may be performing a similar experiment on yourself every time you take two medications at the same time. Certain drugs react strongly when taken with others, often causing serious side effects. Hi, I'm Melvin Smith and I'm a CVS pharmacist. If you're taking medications, you should make sure you're always storing them properly.
Medications and vitamins should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from bright windows or storage rooms affected by outdoor weather. You shouldn't keep your medications in the bathroom. Although the 'medicine cabinet' is usually in the bathroom, the humidity from the shower can seep in and that process can break down your medicines. You should also make sure you don't store them in a cabinet above a stove or sink. And don't choose the refrigerator unless the pharmacist, label, or package insert advises refrigeration after opening. You should keep your medication in its original container so you're aware of the name and expiration date. If you have young children, keep medications and vitamins out of their reach and always ask for child-proof containers. When you're traveling with medication, it's best to keep it in your carry-on luggage and in its original container, so that airport security personnel know that the pills were prescribed by a doctor. When disposing of unused, unneeded, or expired medications, take them out of their original containers, mix them with an undesirable substance like coffee grounds, then put them in an empty can or sealed bag before throwing them out. Don't flush drugs down the toilet unless the instructions specifically tell you to do so.
I hope these tips help you with storing your prescription medications and vitamins properly. If you have any questions, talk to your CVS pharmacist. We're always happy to help.
