British Pathe newsreels that I spliced together showing how life went on in Britain amid the devastation of World War II -- from 1942, a sharp criticism of a nostalgic, romantic pageant on the steps of St Paul's in London, baritone Sydney Burchall insists Britain is worth fighting for and Tahitian soldiers have a hula party. From 1943, the Arthur Rosebury Swingtette with a romantic number, impressionist Carl Carlisle makes jokes about the blackout, women circus trainers do their bit in Manchester while "men are busy taming the Hun", xylophone ace Eric Winston backed by a jazz combo and Felix Mendelssohn's Hawaiian Serenaders bring dreams of an exotic peacetime to war-weary Brits
