"One of the most intelligent animals we know of": recognize people through touch, change the color, pattern or texture of their skin to match their mood.
It's feeding time at the aquariums octopus exhibit where you can get a close-up look at one of the ocean's most amazing creatures. Each day, an aquarist feeds the octopus by hand so we can monitor its health and diet. Watch what happens when the octopus senses a fish nearby. It doesn't take long for those eight tentacles to swing into action. Each tentacle is lined with dozens of suckers that can taste the food they catch. They can also distinguish one person from the next simply by touching that persons skin. The octopus is one of the smartest creatures we know of. And each one has its own personality; some are shy, while others seem to enjoy human company. Octopuses can also express their emotions by changing the color, pattern of texture of their skin to match their mood.
Once feeding time is over, the octopus retreats to its den to rest and await its next encounter. Be sure to take a closer look the next time you're near-and discover the incredible features of this amazing animal.
