Brinton Averil Smith, cello and Eveyln Chen, piano. Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen in an arrangement for cello, following the Feuermann version where possible but expanding the transcription to include the entire piece (as Feuermann performed in recital.) From the Feuermann tribute recital at th10/21/08 at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

  • I've always preferred the rich sound of cello over violin... but to hear cello solo for this piece.. just amazing! 5/5 Bravo!

  • I've listened to a number of performances of this on doublebass w/piano here. Neither the bass nor the cello can soar above the piano to make themselves heard the was a violin can. My compliments to the pianist for the restraint that allowed us to hear in detail the most excellent cellist' performance.

  • Hands down better technique than many of the big names, arguably rosty and fournier, others...

  • This really gives the piece a more haunting feel. Very impressive. Not better, just a different flavor, which is always good.

  • Love your bow arm! Great! This is something I never reached.

    Thanks for this upload!

  • @OjiiSan53 That could be it. Is Piazzola's piece originally in Portuguese? Perhaps the performer just translated it? The poetry/prose I heard was done in English. Or maybe the guy I heard translated it from Portuguese to English :)

  • @Elainelps0421 Not sure if this is the one you mean, but on the album "Isoca", Horacio Fumero does a wonderful rendition of Astor Piazzola's "Libertango", reciting poetry in Portugese, and quite at the end, singing just a couple of bars. It is truly wonderful, altho' I don't speak a word of Portugese. It's just, well, ... it's very sexy. You can find it on Rhapsody, or at Amazon.com. It's an import, but you can get it from $8.88 from one of their Z-shop sellers.

  • @OjiiSan53 Agreed, re: Violin! But I'll have to check out that Bach transcription for bass....sounds intriguing! By the way, many years ago, I heard a bass recital. The bassist had a difficult enough part to play on one of his pieces, but at the same time, had to recite some sort of prose or poetry. Do you know of this piece? And, if so, do you know the name and composer of it? Thanks!

  • @Elainelps0421 I agree it doesn't lend itself to the lower range for "listenability". My hat's off the the bassist that undertakes it. A cellist has a bit easier time, I think, having a more nimble instrument for such work (tho' the violin is obviously the most nimble of all). The work that must go into preparation of this piece is impressive. I will confess to being more impressed with Jaco Pastorius' playing of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy for keyboard transcribed for bass. Jaw dropping ...

  • @OjiiSan53 I just listened to a version by double bass, and I feel the cello version is much, much easier to hear. I am sure it was arranged for double bass to show off the technical prowess of the bassist, but it just doesn't lend itself well to this piece as performed in the same manner as the cello/piano version or the original violin/piano version. This particular cellist is technically excellent. His tone in the upper register is so pure and clean, and his technique is marvelous.

  • Muy bueno
