Trying to get the baby elephant to bathe in the water.
This was a very eye-opening experience at the Elephant Nature Preserve. There are about 35 elephants here that have been rescued from abuse at either tourist elephant trekking businesses or logging companies that use elephants to haul logs. There is a long tradition of beating elephants into submission when they are young so they will behave well to do whatever work it is that you want them to do. It's truly horrible what is done to these elephants. NEVER, NEVER ride an elephant that has a seat/harness/basket up top. This is terrible for the elephant's back and cripples them. Do NOT go on tourist trekking trips where you ride elephants this way. The only humane way to ride an elephant is to sit on their neck with no harness. Their neck is actually much stronger than their back. Amazing trip and recommended to all- Elephant Nature Center. They have an office in Chiang Mai and take you by bus to a VERY remote area about an hour and a half away.
