Before the event:
Before the Royal Rumble 2003, HBK drew the number #1 entry that Jericho wanted, so Jericho won an Over-The-Top Battle Royale and picked entry number #2. Jericho eliminated Michaels in the Rumble and Michaels distracted Jericho later on in the causing Jericho to be eliminated. Shawn Michaels then appeared as a guest of Jericho's show, The Highlight Reel, and Jericho stated that Michaels was his childhood idol. These two feuded for two months before finally settling there differences at the Show of Shows, WrestleMania.
