Dakari is a third grader at Cornerstones charter school Washington-Parks Academy, located in Redford and has a very unique story.

Two years ago, he was in bed when his father shot his mother while she was sleeping in the next room. Luckily she survived. His father was incarcerated but Hodges never missed a beat. Despite this life-altering experience, people who know him best, like his teacher June Poirrier, describe him as a spiritual child who always thinks of others over himself.

The Pistons and Genisys Credit Union honored Dakari as a Michigan Hero on Friday 2/19/10.
