This is a slow scan of my Black Americana postcard collection, starting with the first volume and continuing with future posting of additional volumes. By pausing the video, you can examine the graphic details of each card. The cards feature American Negro images as they were represented on postal greeting cards from the turn of the 20th Century (1890's) through the middle of the last century (1960's.) Most of the cards showed images of Black people that were derogatory and demeaning by todays standards of human decency and good taste, not to mention, political correctness.

The cards are arranged alphabetically by the name of the companies that published them. As I post additional volumes, I'll try to add information to clarify why this material is extremely important to American history studies in general, and to Black American analysis in particular.

The postcard was designed for ordinary American people to correspond with one another at a time when there were very few other ways for interpersonal contact; as such, a study of the images becomes a great revelation as to what really went on in America's history.
The cards range from simple cartoons and primative graphics to miniature works of art, using early stone lithography and extraordinary examples of early engraving techniques.
Additional details about my collection is available on doowopman. com. Eventually, when my entire collection of over 5400 postcards is posted on YouTube, I'll start with my collection of Black tradecards, stereoviews, and birthday, Christmas, Easter and other holiday cards.

  • nice collection, take a look at mine if you want

  • Why do you have these?

  • Great video with super doowop background music! I really liked what you did. I had no idea that this kind of postcard ever existed and to think that they were actually sent through the mail! Amazing! I'll be checking back to see the rest of your incredible collection and to hear the super doo-wop songs. Thanks for the education.
