Frank is easy to find on Tuesday. He's at JFK airport at 7am sharp, not in the terminal, they don't let him in; he's out in the parking lot, rain or shine, with a stopwatch and a clip-board, rating the big jets. He's timing the big birds, timing take-offs and landings, counting planes, studying, deleting what he knows happened with facts: 737 is the workhorse of the fleet, safest bird flying. Directed by Christine Simpson, written by Karl Greenberg, produced by Michelle Chen, featuring Tim Kang, Alexis Chang, Susan Kapp, Lawrence Wong, Matthew Woods. A Fluid Motion Theater & Film production, 2004.

  • From the writer:

Flight Safety was an attempt to understand a woman I saw once at the airport. She was maybe 35, with a stopwatch, a clipboard, and binoculars, and also a child, whom she ignored. She concentrated instead on studying aircraft movements, timing arriving and departing aircraft, and noting each result on lined paper clipped to her board. She fascinated me. I found myself inventing explanations, convinced she had been there before, doing precisely the same thing, maybe every week.

  • Is Frank a real guy/planespotter?
