Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin sing 'Birth Of The Blues' in an impromptu moment at the Cal Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe Nevada, May 1963. This audio is rare & unrehearsed, the only known recording of Judy singing 'Birth Of The Blues'.
Judy & Liza were in the audience watching the Rat Pack work thier magic, & unexpectedly, Judy was invited to join them on stage. 'Sing something ... but no rainbows.'
Built in 1926, the Cal Neva Lodge reached its height of glory in the early 1960's, especially when Frank Sinatra became the owner.
The history of the Cal Neva Lodge includes a 13 year old Judy, in 1935, being discovered by Al Rosen, & the subsequent contract with MGM.
Recent news reports indicate that the Cal Neva Lodge, once a thriving resort/casino, is in crisis & may close it's doors forever ... along with it's rich history.
I included unusual photos, not very common ... with graphic backgrounds in Blue.
I love to hear bantering exchanges, so I provided that as well.

Music by Ray Henderson, lyrics by Buddy G. DeSylva and Lew Brown. 1926.
These are the blues
Nothing but blues
Oh, they say some people long ago
Were searching for a different tune
One that they could croon
As only they can
They only had the rhythm
They started swaying to and fro
They didn't know just what to use
That is how the blues really began
They heard the breeze in the trees
Singing weird melodies
And they made that the start, the start of the blues
And from a jail came the wail
Of a down-hearted frail
And they played that
As part of the blues
From a whippoorwill
Way up on a hill
They took a new note
Pushed it through a horn
Until it was worn
Into a blue note
And then they nursed it
They rehearsed it
And then sent out that news
That the Southland gave birth to the blues
They nursed it
And they rehearsed it
That the Southland they gave birth to the blues

    Hi dear, i too:-))

  • love this

  • Incredible. Even with the poor sound, I felt like I was there!

  • what year was this from and where?

  • does anyone know when this was recorded? It's funny how when the Frank and Dean wanted her to sing they didn't want her to upstage them with her singing Over the rainbow because then the audience would have went nuts! She would have stolen their thunder. Did you hear how the audience busted into applause when they said Judy was in the house? WOW

  • WONDERFUL AS ALWAYS MICHELE!
